How to Tailor Your CV for Each Job in Under 20 Minutes
A repeatable system that lets you customize your CV for every application without rewriting from scratch.
Why generic CVs lose
Recruiters can spot a generic CV instantly: the summary is vague, the skills do not match the ad, and the experience bullets read as if they were copied from the previous application. Tailoring is what separates the candidates who get interviews from those who keep applying without response.
Step 1: Build a master CV
Maintain one long master document — three, four, even five pages — that contains every project, achievement, metric, tool, and certification you have ever earned. This is your personal database. You never send this version; you draw from it.
Step 2: Decode the job ad
Read the job ad and highlight three things in three different colors: required skills and tools, soft skills and ways of working, and outcomes the company wants. Those three buckets become the spine of your tailored CV.
Step 3: Rewrite the summary in one minute
Open with your role and years of experience, then echo the two or three most important things from the ad. "Senior marketing manager with 7 years in B2B SaaS, specialized in lifecycle email and lead-gen automation." Specific, calibrated, instantly relevant.
Step 4: Reorder bullets, do not invent them
Within each role, move the bullets that match the ad to the top. Cut bullets that do not pull weight for this application. Do not invent experience — reframing is honest, fabrication is not.
Step 5: Refresh the skills block
Lead with the tools and methods the ad asks for, in their exact spelling. Drop skills that are irrelevant or obvious. This block is the most ATS-readable part of your CV; treat it like a keyword section.
Step 6: Save with a clean filename
Name the file firstname-lastname-companyname.pdf. Recruiters open dozens of CVs; a clean filename gets you remembered and never overwritten in their downloads folder.
Build the habit
Twenty minutes per application sounds expensive until you compare it to the cost of being ignored. After ten applications you will have a personal tailoring playbook and the process will drop to ten minutes.
