Managing Up: How to Work Effectively With Your Boss
Strong relationships with your manager are one of the highest-return investments in your career.
Understand their priorities
Spend 20 minutes thinking through your manager's goals, pressures, and what they are measured on. Almost every difficult interaction makes more sense once you see it through their constraints.
Adapt to their communication style
Some managers want short Slack updates, others want a weekly written digest, others prefer in-person. Ask early and adjust. Communication mismatch is the single most fixable workplace friction.
Bring solutions, not just problems
When you raise an issue, attach two possible options and a recommendation. Even if your recommendation is wrong, the framing positions you as a thinker rather than a reporter.
Make them look good
Help your manager succeed and they will pull you along. Anticipate what they need, surface risks early, never blindside them in meetings.
Have one-on-ones with structure
Bring a short agenda: top priorities, blockers, decisions needed, career topics. Structure removes the awkwardness and makes the meeting useful for both of you.
Give honest feedback when asked
If your manager invites feedback, give it thoughtfully. Trust grows when you can hold uncomfortable conversations with calm and respect.
