How to Convert an Internship Into a Full-Time Offer
Internships are extended job interviews. Here is how to convert one into a return offer.
Treat it like a 12-week project
Walk in with a plan. In the first week, understand the team's priorities and your role within them. In weeks two through ten, deliver. In the last two weeks, document and present what you did.
Find one project to own end-to-end
Beyond your assigned tasks, identify a small project you can own from scoping to delivery. Ownership is the clearest signal of full-time potential.
Ask for feedback early and often
Schedule a feedback conversation at the end of week two, then every two weeks. Use the feedback before the next check-in. Visible improvement is what return offers reward.
Build relationships beyond your team
Have coffee with one new person each week. Internal networks are how internal offers move forward when budgets are tight.
Document your impact
Keep a weekly journal of what you shipped, what you learned, and any metrics. At the end of the internship, you will have the case for your conversion conversation already written.
Ask for the offer directly
Two or three weeks before the internship ends, ask your manager: "I would like to continue here. What would the path to a full-time offer look like?" Direct asks beat hopeful waiting.
